A good engine room inspection starts with preparation and safety.

Many engine problems announce themselves audibly before they appear on gauges.

Establish Your Normal Sound Profile

When running at idle and cruise:

  • Listen to the rhythm of each engine – steady, even, with no hunting or stumbling.
  • Notice the baseline vibration – how the engines feel and sound through the deck and handrails.
  • Pay attention to auxiliary systems – generator, pumps, blowers, alternators.
